I had the opportunity to detail two of the nicest early 1950's Woodie Wagons this past week. Both cars are street rods built by Tim Mattson. The red 52 is Tim's personal ride that he built about 19 years ago.
His numerous trophies are stacked high, but they lose some of their shine as he works hard to build very high quality hot rods for some prominent names in Central Cal. A short time ago I worked on a clients car at Tim's shop and he invited me back to detail his own car along with a blue1950 Woodie Wagon he recently completed for another client.
Tim is as old school as they get, cutting and polishing using wax is all he has ever known. I did not want to tell him I had not used wax in a long time and I had never detailed a car with real wood on it before. Preparing to do these cars made me think I might need to use some wax again.
The correction on both cars was pretty straight forward. The Blue 1950 had new paint with some rash from shop work and assembly. I did not go too aggressive since the paint is still relatively new. The Red 1952 has 19 year old Centari paint and needed two steps to get looking good. I topped both with GTECHNIQ C2v3.
I had to stop and think here because the cars looked good, but I was not real happy with the wood. The C2v3 took to the varnish just like it does to paint but I wanted to try wax. In my younger days I had done some wood refinishing and always liked the look and feel of wood freshly waxed but this wood looked almost too shiny.
In comes Dr. Beasley's and you can see for yourself it gave the wood a softer shine and a great feel. I waited several hours after application of C2v3 (pic #1) then applied Dr. Beasley's Wax (pic#2). The buff off was like butter and gave the wood a softer shine. This softer shine, I think, looks better than the more plastic shine it had with just the sealer.
I am still learning and that is what makes getting up in the morning so much fun. Sometimes I make mistakes and I am kicking myself for it all day. Other days I nail it and that feels great! Thanks Renny for supplying the Dr. Beasley's. Sometimes old school is the best school!
